Okay this post might be a little late since we’re already mid-way into January, BUT I still think it’s valuable. I consider myself an all-weather runner. There’s not much that will stop me from going out. High wind, smoky unhealthy air, an actual thunderstorm?
I’ve run in the rain, snow, sleet, extreme heat, extreme humidity, sub-zero temperatures. Honestly it’s because I hate the treadmill so I always tough it out.
But it’s so hard sometimes to get out in the freezing cold!! I’ve learned a lot over the years and have mostly perfected my winter running gear so I thought I’d share with you all in case you’re wondering how the heck those insane runners you see running in single digit temps are surviving.
Under Armour ColdGear
I’ve been using UA ColdGear since I first started running. They make different levels of warmth for various weather conditions from 2.0 (lightest) up to 4.0 (warmest).
I swear by their leggings and long-sleeve tops. I haven’t bought any of their jackets yet, but with the extreme cold we’ve been having this year, it’s next on my list to purchase!
A good headband or beanie
I personally use a headband – also Under Armour – that keeps my ears nice and toasty while still allowing some heat to escape from the top of my head. I find that a beanie is too warm for me while running, but if you run cold, a beanie is likely the better option for you.
Gloves or mittens
My hands are always the toughest thing to keep warm. Mittens would probably be best for me, but I have yet to find a pair I like. However, I’ve had really good luck with Oiselle Lux gloves. They come up my wrist high enough that no cold air gets into the gap and they have a giant watch hole so you can even access your watch easily!
Jacket
If the temperatures are below 30 degrees Fahrenheit, I add a lightweight jacket over my ColdGear top. This keeps my core warm which helps keep the rest of me warm. It also keeps my arms a bit warmer since that’s where I tend to struggle the most (after my poor fingers).
Noxgear or safety vest
Not strictly winter gear, but since daylight is so limited in the winter, I thought I’d include this since many of us are running in the dark either before work or after. You definitely need some kind of safety vest, but my recommendation is a light-up Noxgear vest. This thing makes you so highly visible, I could never run in the dark without it. It makes me feel so much safer.
